The sun streams into red Rooibos with sweet fruity aromas, capturing the essence of summer in berries, grapes, black currants and hibiscus flowers. Large, superior grade Lapsang Souchong leaves are dried over a pinewood fire, giving this tea a distinctive smoky aroma and flavor. Welcome to The Tea House on Los Rios, located at the heart of beautiful San Juan Capistrano, California! We invite you to join us for an extraordinary high tea experience that will transport you to a charming bygone era.
Experience The Best
Today, that legacy lives on as their grandson Damian welcomes guests from all walks of life to unwind, relax, and connect with loved ones at The Tea House. I love the fact that we are a family owned and operated company, and that we have been able to grow due to our love for this business, and I think it carries through to each customer. It’s also fun because people who join us are usually celebrating something – we host a lot of bridal and baby showers, birthdays and anniversaries – so it is amazing to be a part of those special moments with people. In a world caught in the constant whirlwind of activity, their vision was a breath of fresh air.

In today's stress-filled society, such a place would be truly exceptional, relevant, and healing. I had to have some to bring home and I've been enjoying it ever since. This tea evokes childhood summers in the bright blaze of a strawberry patch.
Green Teas

As an only child (until the age of 15), I connected more with adults than I did with kids my own age, so I spent more time at the restaurant and working with my family. The Tea House on Los Rios stands out as a truly exceptional brunch destination in the area, making it a must-visit for those seeking a distinctive dining experience.
Flavored Black Teas
It took over two years to restore the cottage (most of which we did as a family), plant gardens, come up with a menu, and open their doors. Our blend of fruit pieces, including peaches with rosehips, hibiscus and natural flavors produces a beautiful ruby red drink. It’s loaded with peach flavor, with a tart undertone and sweet finish. Natural orange essential oil, dried orange peel and fresh cinnamon not only create a wonderfully aromatic tea, but a delicious one as well. Bold citrus notes are enhanced by the cinnamon, a combination that energizes and soothes at the same time.
January of 1998 marked a milestone as they swung open their doors, ushering in the inaugural guests to The Tea House on Los Rios. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers? The Tea House on Los Rios was born from the passions of my grandparents, Allan and Claudia Niccola. Over twenty-five years ago, they embarked on a mission to infuse tranquility into modern life through the art of tea. The concept was simple yet profound – to offer respite from the daily grind and rekindle connections with loved ones over a soothing cup of tea.
However, if I were to pinpoint the most pivotal lesson among them, it would undoubtedly be the profound significance of maintaining a sense of gratitude and humility as I navigate this path. Originally a quaint cottage, The Tea House was lovingly restored by the Niccola family in the 1990s. At the time it was a legal requirement to live on the property to have a business on Los Rios Street. Allan and Claudia Niccola purchased an 80-ton, two-story Victorian house and had it moved from Camino Del Avion to its current location directly behind The Tea House. If you're looking for a more substantial meal, our daily menu offers delectable options.
Bourbon Street Vanilla (Rooibos)
Deep cherry flavor with almond notes create a silky, delicious cup of tea. The flavor profile of freshly picked cherries adds a pleasant and subtle sweetness to the nutty almond character and intensity of the Ceylon tea it is blended with. This “Champagne of Tea” is renowned for its light body, crisp floral undertones and purity in taste.
While we have grown a great amount over the past couple of years, there is still room for growth, and to grow takes money. We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Owning and operating your own small business is never an easy road, but it is very rewarding. I am often not only the front of house manager, but depending on what is needed, I can be washing dishes, decorating a cake, filing sales taxes, and serving tables.
Milk and sugar will enhance the chocolate flavor, but this tea is delicious as poured. Grown and harvested from the Kagoshima prefecture in Japan, this traditional steamed and pan dried green tea is known for its light color, smooth body and reasonable depth. A pleasant and approachable green tea that is perfect for everyday consumption. An exquisite blend of black and green tea leaves, perfumed with Jasmine and accented with blue cornflower petals. This tea is noted for its seductive, citrusy, bergamot flavor, uplifting aromas and medium body. The cottage’s renaissance took nearly three years of dedication – restoring its timeless charm, cultivating enchanting gardens, curating exquisite tea blends, and crafting a menu that echoed their devotion.
The realization that I am blessed to be able to pursue what I love and continue a legacy is something that constantly humbles me. It’s easy to become engrossed in the day-to-day challenges and triumphs, but reminding myself of the fortune I’ve been given instills a deep sense of gratitude. The Niccola family quickly recognized the significance of creating a place where people could forge meaningful relationships. They envisioned a special, serene setting where guests could enjoy each other's company.
I longed for the restaurant industry, the ambiance of Los Rios Street, the idea of taking tea. So I left the corporate world and came back to my roots and take over The Tea House on Los Rios. In addition to truly finding my calling, I am able to carry on my family’s legacy of a place that so many hold near and dear to their hearts.
We’d love to hear more about your business. We specialize in Afternoon Tea, a concept that we, as Americans, don’t traditionally do. Our guests get to enjoy loose leaf teas in mismatched china, our famous scones with raspberry preserves and our Early California Cream, a wide variety of delightful finger sandwiches, and fun desserts. The exotic character of one of our most popular teas is created by combining high quality Sencha, essential cherry oil and rose petals, giving it a sweet and melodious flavor, and wonderful aroma. A refreshing, robust flavor profile is produced by the piquant, sweet mangos that are blended together with Ceylon black tea. Bold, bright and full of flavor, one sip of this tea will transport you to the tropics in no time.
It has been an exciting two and a half years since I’ve taken over – while keeping the heart and soul the same, we’ve been able to grow our business more than double, which is so exciting for us all to see. While my grandparents opened this in their late fifties, I was just ten years old at the time. I helped lay a 110-year-old brick walkway, washed dishes, bussed tables and eventually became a server in high school and college. I decided the “family business” wasn’t for me, as much as I loved the hospitality aspect of it – I wanted an office job where I could count on a steady paycheck and have good benefits. I graduated from college with an accounting degree, joined a major CPA firm, and moved up the ranks… but something was missing. Embarking on this journey has been a remarkable opportunity, one that I recognize not everyone gets to experience.
We bring the exquisite flavors and charm of The Tea House straight to your occasion. As I got older, I really enjoyed hosting events for people, having friends over for dinner, and I knew that I wanted to do something in regards to the hospitality business, but wasn’t sure how I would make money at it. I know that with continued growth, we will be able to hire more staff and reinvest into the property that creates a really special ambiance.
The sharp flavor is distinctive and bold, making it popular among those who prefer a strong cup of green tea. Smooth, sweet watermelon and light, refreshing cucumber notes take this green tea to another level. Mellow and mild, this tea will brighten your morning or can be used as a natural afternoon pick-me-up. Essential rose oil, soft, pink rose buds and large leaf tea from China are blended together to create an aromatic delight and provocative flavor that will leave your taste buds wanting more. The sweet fragrance and aroma of the wild blackberry is captured in this delicious tea, making it one of the most popular here at The Tea House.
